PLANT-BASED MILK HAS HELPED THE EARTH

Our everyday diet affects the climate and the planet. Mother Earth will be much happier if we replace cow’s milk in our coffee with plant-based milk, because animal products use a large amount of water and land and emit an enormous amount of methane: all of this has an especially negative impact on the environment. So which superhero can replace animal milk? Which alternative needs the least water and land while still keeping the most delicious taste? Let’s find out in this article!

Plant-based milk – The savior of fields and forests

Animal products require a lot of land. Worldwide, the dairy and cheese industry occupies an area of land the size of China. In addition, cows not only need space to live, they also need a huge amount of plant-based feed – which has to be grown somewhere. When a soybean becomes soy milk, skipping the cow, it turns into a superhero because it uses about 60% less land than the same amount of cow’s milk. The figures for rice milk, almond milk and oat drinks are similar. Therefore, if you want to protect pristine natural landscapes as much as possible, plant-based milk is the key to this challenge.

    Plant-based milk – A superhero against CO2

The fact is that around 90% of imported soy used as animal feed has an extremely negative impact on the CO2 balance. But don’t worry: Joya is committed to using only soybeans sourced from Austria and Europe, so you can be sure that your soy drink does not harm the environment. Even when local cows are happily enjoying grass and hay, their digestive systems really stink up the climate: every year, a single cow emits an amount of CO2 equivalent to a small car driving 18,000 km – and there are two million cows in Austria alone. The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) has published some alarming figures: the five largest meat and dairy corporations in the world cause more greenhouse gas emissions each year than the largest oil corporation. In the race for the best CO2 balance, almond milk and oat milk proudly boast the strongest climate-protecting superpowers, while soy milk and rice milk are still significantly better than conventional animal milk.

Plant-based milk – The superhero that beats its competitors

Next, let’s move on to the issue of water consumption. Between 100 and 500 liters of water are used to produce 1 liter of cow’s milk, depending on the farming practices and feed used. Per capita, 52.8 liters of cow’s milk were most recently consumed in Germany, while the figure in Austria reached 77.4 liters. This astonishing amount of water, calculated per person for the milk consumption of Austrians, corresponds to 220 full bathtubs. Once again, plant-based milk is the better choice. If we replace the same amount of cow’s milk with oat milk, we only use enough water to fill 18 bathtubs. However, almond and rice drinks also require a considerable amount of water in the production process. Therefore, if you are concerned about wasting water, we would cast our vote for the oat and soy milk superheroes to protect the climate.
