rBST is a synthetic growth hormone used to increase milk yield in cows. Conventional dairy brands often use synthetic growth hormones and reproductive stimulants for dairy cows. However, for certified organic milk brands, this is not allowed. The organic cows of Horizon Organic are absolutely not injected with rBST like conventional cows. This helps reduce stress on the animals and limits human exposure to chemicals that can affect the endocrine system.

2. Because farmers do not use antibiotics

The use of antibiotics is prohibited for organic cows from birth. The first and best line of defense against illness is prevention. But when a calf or cow becomes sick, Horizon Organic farmers rely on natural methods to treat them. If an animal cannot fully regain its health using organically approved treatments, we may use other prescribed synthetic medicines to help the calf or cow return to a healthy state. However, once antibiotics or other prohibited substances are used, that cow’s milk will no longer be used in our products. Horizon Organic cows graze on healthy, certified organic pastures for at least 120 days each year. When they cannot be out on pasture, they are fed only organic, vegetarian feed made without genetically modified grains and without the use of persistent toxic pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizers.
