USDA ORGANIC CERTIFICATION (UNITED STATES)


    In the United States, organic products are always a top priority for consumers. As a result, common evaluation standards such as the USDA Organic certification are highly valued. This is one of the strictest organic standards — and is considered a true food safety benchmark. To earn this certification, farms or production facilities must meet up to 200 stringent criteria. Only products containing 95%–100% certified organic ingredients are allowed to display the USDA Organic seal on their labels.

    What is USDA Organic Certification?


    USDA stands for the United States Department of Agriculture — a federal agency responsible for developing and enforcing policies related to agriculture, forestry, and fisheries. This agency also grants USDA Organic Certification for agricultural products, and only items with more than 95% organic ingredients are eligible.


    Organic agriculture produces food using environmentally protective methods and avoids artificial substances such as pesticides and antibiotics. Organic farmers must follow strict standards governing everything from crop cultivation, soil quality, irrigation water, pest control, livestock practices, and rules for food additives. These standards cover the entire food cycle — from the farm to the consumer’s table.

    USDA Organic Certification must ensure:

    – Conservation of natural resources and biodiversity

    – Animal health and welfare protection

    – Animals raised outdoors with space to behave naturally

    – Only approved substances may be used

    – No genetically modified ingredients

    – Annual inspections by certified approval agencies

    – Organic food must be separated from non-organic products

    Labeling


    USDA Organic Certification is monitored annually through USDA-authorized organizations, including unannounced or announced inspections at production facilities. Any certified organic product that violates USDA regulations is subject to enforcement actions, including financial penalties, suspension, or revocation of certification. All USDA-certified organic products are clearly marked with the certification seal:

    – “100% organic”: All ingredients must be certified organic; all production and processing methods must be organic; packaging must state the certification agency; USDA seal allowed.

    – “Organic”: Product contains more than 95% certified organic ingredients; the remaining 5% must be from the approved list; packaging must state the certification agency; USDA seal allowed.

    – “Made with organic”: Product contains at least 70% certified organic ingredients; packaging must state the certification agency; USDA seal is NOT allowed.

    – “Specific organic ingredients”: Multi-ingredient products with less than 70% certified organic ingredients; USDA seal is NOT allowed.


    Violations of USDA labeling regulations are subject to fines of up to $10,000 per violation.
