A FULL STOMACH AT BREAKFAST DOESN’T MEAN FULL NUTRITION…

A breakfast with sticky rice, bread, steamed buns or steamed rice rolls may help children feel full, but it does not necessarily provide enough and balanced nutrients, and may affect the development of growing children.

Most parents are aware of the importance of breakfast for young children. However, many still feed their kids based on instinct, thinking that “anything is fine as long as they’re full”. This unintentionally results in breakfasts that do not provide sufficient nutrients: children may feel full, but still lack essential substances and proper nutritional balance.

To have a more realistic and scientific view of a child’s meal plan, nutritionists recommend that parents add organic milk to breakfast. This is an effective way to provide the protein that children may be lacking in their morning diet, while also significantly improving their height and weight.

A breakfast is considered adequate when it provides 30–35% of the total daily energy a child needs, in which protein should account for 13–20%, fat 20–30%, and carbohydrates 50–60%. An ideal meal balances food groups that provide carbohydrates such as rice, bread, noodles, cereal… with protein-rich foods like meat, fish, eggs, and milk.

If a child’s regular breakfast is sticky rice, bread, steamed buns or steamed rice rolls, it is very likely that they are only full, but not receiving sufficient and balanced nutrients. This can affect their overall development.

The National Nutrition Census (2019–2020) shows that the rate of stunting among school-aged children (5–19 years old) is 14.8%; the rate of anemia among children aged 5–9 is 9.2% and among those aged 10–14 is 8.4%. One of the reasons is that the typical Vietnamese diet tends to be high in starch compared to other nutrient groups.

Protein plays a key role in building cells, forming important hormones and enzymes, and participating in antibody production. Energy from protein provides 13–20% of the body’s daily needs and is abundant in meat, fish, eggs, and milk. Additionally, protein helps transport nutrients through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream and from the blood to body tissues and across cell membranes.

Milk is a natural food rich in high-quality protein, including two types: casein (80%), which supports the absorption of minerals, and whey (20%), which contains many essential amino acids for children’s development. Comparing total energy in one 180 ml serving of milk with a packet of sticky rice and a bowl of pork noodle soup, protein from milk accounts for 20% of total energy, while sticky rice provides only 10% and noodle soup 16%. Thus, organic milk is a protein-rich food, suitable to be added to breakfast for growing children.

Adding organic milk to breakfast is a simple and effective way to provide the protein that may be lacking in a child’s morning meal. Moreover, a breakfast menu that includes organic milk can significantly improve children’s height and weight. Drinking more organic milk is also recommended by the National Institute of Nutrition and many international nutrition organizations.

According to the standards of The Soil Association (the most authoritative organic certification body of the European Union), to be certified organic, agricultural products must be grown, stored, and processed without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, biotechnology, or chemical irradiation. When choosing milk labeled “100% Organic” like Daioni organic milk, mothers can be fully confident that every component is organic—from the soil, to the feed for organic cows, to the final milk for consumers. Daioni Organic is proud to carry the “100% Organic” label on its packaging, meaning it is fully organic from farm to table. Importantly, cows at Daioni’s organic farms are not forced to produce more milk through hormone injections. Instead, they are allowed to rest and relax, producing the highest quality natural organic milk.
